  • Olympics: Reborn Brazil make quarters as crisis-hit Argentina exit

first_imgManchester City’s new recruit Jesus said before the game he didn’t care if Brazil’s sought after goal came “off a belly or a bum” and A Selecao got the bit of fortune they needed when Barbosa’s opener trickled into the far corner off his shin.Jesus and Luan put the game beyond doubt either side of half-time before Barbosa, who has been linked with a move to Premier League champions Leicester City, fired in a deflected fourth 10 minutes from time.‘Mafia’Argentina needed to win to secure a place in the quarters due to their inferior goal difference with the Hondurans after both had lost to Portugal and beat Algeria in their opening two group matches. However, the Central Americans sprung a huge surprise as Antony Lorenzo’s penalty 15 minutes from time put them in front in Brasilia and, despite Mauricio Martinez’s equaliser deep into stoppage time, Argentina bowed out in embarrassing fashion. The Albiceleste’s chances were severely hampered by chaotic preparation for the Games.Coach Julio Olarticoechea, who had been coaching the Argentine women’s team, was put in charge just weeks before the tournament began after Gerardo Martino resigned citing power squabbles at the Argentine Football Association (AFA) and clubs not releasing players for the Olympics.Legendary former player Diego Maradona has branded AFA’s management a “mafia,” and raged against football administrators in Argentina once more on Wednesday.“Honduras can’t beat us. A country for which I have a lot of respect, but they play baseball they don’t know anything about football,” he told Radio La Red.Argentina’s conquerors in the 2014 World Cup final Germany remain on course for another Brazilian party at the Maracana on August 20 as they brushed aside the hapless Fijians in Belo Horizonte.Fiji benefited from New Zealand’s disqualification for fielding an ineligible player to qualify for the Olympics and conceded 23 goals over the course of their Group C games having also been smashed 8-0 and 5-1 by South Korea and Mexico respectively.Arsenal winger Serge Gnabry also scored twice to lead the competition’s scoring charts along with Petersen on five.Share on: WhatsApp Neymar yet to hit his stride, but Brazil flying highRio de Janeiro, Brazil | AFP  |Hosts Brazil finally launched their campaign for Olympic gold as sought after starlet Gabriel Barbosa struck twice to defeat Denmark 4-0 on Wednesday, as two-time champions Argentina bowed out of Rio 2016.Barcelona star Neymar is still yet to hit the net, but played the role of facilitator as Gabriel Jesus and Luan were also on target to end a run of over 200 minutes without a goal after stalemates with Iraq and South Africa got their campaign off to a faltering start.Victory sealed top spot in Group A to set up a quarter-final meeting with Colombia on Saturday.Crisis-hit Argentina didn’t survive a sluggish start as they were dumped out by Honduras, whilst 2012 gold medallists Mexico were also sent packing.Freiburg striker Nils Petersen scored five times as world champions Germany smashed Pacific islanders Fiji 10-0 to seal their place in the last eight behind South Korea, who beat Mexico 1-0 thanks to Kwon Chang-hoon’s stunning strike in Brasilia.Colombia moved into the knockout stages by beating Nigeria 2-0 with captain Teo Gutierrez and Dorlan Pabon on target. The Africans had already done enough to top Group B rendering Japan’s 1-0 win over Sweden meaningless.Denmark progressed despite defeat in Salvador as Iraq and South Africa played out a 1-1 draw in the other Group A match.Portugal secured top spot in Group D with a 1-1 draw against Algeria in Belo Horizonte to set up a last eight meeting with Germany on Saturday.South Korea face Honduras and Nigeria take on Denmark in the remaining quarter-finals.last_img read more

  • Guides to cash in on ‘avi-tourism’

first_img6 June 2008A group of 17 students who recently graduated from the BirdLife South Africa avi-career entrepreneurial programme are set to give the local eco-tourism industry a major boost, as they head out to work as bird guides along the country’s numerous birding routes. The group, which is the first to complete the one-year birding course, will be able to take tourists along birding routes, helping them to spot and identify various species of birds along with way.Eco-tourists are flocking to South Africa to see the country’s 900 species of birds. The course was developed in the United States to create jobs and support small business owners in the eco-tourism and community development sectors.“Avi-tourism is becoming the second fastest-growing outdoor activities in the world,” said BirdLife SA guide development manager Priya Vallabh in Nelspruit this week. She said the course taught students how to open their own guide businesses in their communities or gain employment as guides on South Africa’s many birding routes.Theta accredited courseFormerly known as the bird guide development programme, the course is accredited with the Tourism and Hospitality Education and Training Authority (Theta), and is being facilitated by Sasol, BirdLife SA and Junior Achievement South Africa. It offers a basic understanding of what eco-tourism is all about and teaches various business skills such as market research, brand identity, developing and implementing a business plan and managing finances. One of the graduates, David Letsoalo, from Magoebaskloof, said that he found learning about the birds’ characteristics and behaviour the most interesting.“I am passionate about being a bird guide, my dream is to study further and expand my birding expertise to be able to take tours to different parts of the country,” he said.Letsoalo received the Eagle Award from BirdLife SA in 2007, for his exceptional bird guiding skills that were featured in the SABC 2 series Kaelo – Stories of Hope.Even though Letsoalo has seen most of the birds more times than he can remember, he always gets as excited as his audience when he spots a new species for the first time.“Bird guiding is one of the ways local communities in bird-rich areas can earn a sustainable income and help conserve the area’s natural heritage,” said Sasol corporate social investment head Pamilla Mudhray.Source: BuaNewslast_img read more

  • Three African currencies to trade on SA exchange

first_img7 October 2014The first currency futures that track the exchange rate between the South African rand and and select African currencies was launched by the Johannesburg Stock Exchange on Friday, the JSE announced in a statement. The three new currency futures track the exchange rate between the South African rand and the Zambian kwacha, the Kenyan shilling and the Nigerian naira. Currency futures allow investors as well as importers and exporters to protect themselves against the currency movement in the foreign country. The African currencies made their debut on the JSE derivatives market, where they will be quoted against the rand. The three currencies will fall under the JSE’s currency derivatives unit, incepted in 2007, allowing them to be traded with Group of 10 currencies of developed economies, including the dollar, euro and the pound.Cross-currency tradingThe new futures contracts will give market participants exposure on the JSE to the exchange rate between the US dollar and the Zambian, Kenyan and Nigerian currencies by trading against the rand.To promote this cross-currency trading the JSE will charge trading fees on only one of the foreign trade logs, not both. The latest trade statistics from the South African Revenue Service (SARS) show trade flow between South Africa and Nigeria amounted to R34.4-billion between January and July this year. In the same period, trade between South Africa and Kenya amounted to R4,6-billion and trade between South Africa and Zambia was valued at just under R18- billion.“With Africa being a global investment destination it makes sense for the JSE as a major exchange player in Africa to be involved in providing appropriate products to mitigate currency risk and exposure when dealing in Africa,” says Warren Geers, General Manager: Capital Markets at the JSE.Groundbreaking developmentThe JSE partnered with Barclays Africa and specialist brokers, Tradition Futures, to bring this new offering to market. The platform will allow participants to trade anonymously, with the JSE assuming the role of credit counterparty to all transactions.Andrew Gillespie of Tradition Futures says “It is a groundbreaking development to have a transparent, independent, well regulated platform to mitigate or assume FX Risk in these African countries, against any other currency of their choice – that does not prejudice anyone, irrespective of size, domicile or nationality … This allows for a level and fair playing field, where the best price is available to all, without bias or favour, which is a significant facet and feature of this market in African FX on the JSE.SAinfo reporterlast_img read more

  • EU strikes trade deal with Japan

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest Following the announcement by the European Union and Japan that they have reached agreement in principle on a trade pact, the National Pork Producers Council renewed its request that the Trump administration begin negotiations on a free trade agreement with Japan.“The United States must quickly finalize a trade deal with Japan if it wants to maintain that important market,” said Ken Maschhoff, NPPC President. “We can’t stand by while countries around the world negotiate agreements that give them a competitive advantage over American products.“We urge President Trump to make America great again by expanding our market access to Japan — an economically and strategically important ally — through an FTA.”Japan is the highest value market for U.S. pork exports. In 2016, Japanese consumers purchased almost $1.6 billion of U.S. pork products. Demand in Japan for U.S. pork is very strong despite tariffs and other import measures that limit market access for it.NPPC has urged the administration to get a Trans-Pacific Partnership-type deal with Japan. Under that trade agreement, which the pork organization strongly supported, Japan’s tariffs on pork, which are determined through a so-called gate price system, would have been nearly eliminated. Economist Dermot Hayes of Iowa State University estimated that U.S. pork exports to Japan would have increased exponentially under TPP, creating more than 5,000 new U.S. jobs. With an EU-Japan trade pact in place, U.S. pork producers are concerned they will lose market share in the island nation.“Producers are very dependent on exports,” Maschhoff said. “Last year, were exported 26% of our total production, and those exports added more than $50 – representing 36% of the $140 average value of a hog in 2016 – to the price we received for each animal marketed. We can’t afford to lose exports in our No. 1 market.”last_img read more

  • Cardale Jones starts Braxton Miller stars in Ohio States 4224 victory over

Both Ohio State and Virginia Tech wore matching stickers on their helmets in honor of two Virginia journalists, Alison Parker and Adam Ward, who were killed while on live television on August 26 in Roanoke, Virginia. OSU won 42-24. Credit: Samantha Hollingshead / Photo Editor BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Ohio State quarterback battle is over, but it was a former quarterback who stole the show for the Buckeyes in Monday night’s season opener.Redshirt senior Braxton Miller — making his first career start at H-back following three years as OSU’s starting quarterback — rushed for 62 yards and caught 78, scoring twice as the Buckeyes (1-0) took advantage after a first-half scare to top Virginia Tech (0-1), 42-24.“I love Braxton Miller,” OSU coach Urban Meyer said after the game. “He made a lot of decisions that young people have to, and he did it for the best interest of his team, and that’s just when I think about that, it makes you feel good.”The biggest question surrounding the team throughout the offseason was answered when redshirt junior quarterback Cardale Jones took the field to begin the game. After the game, Jones said he was not aware of who the starter was until Meyer told him to take the field out of the sideline huddle.Jones, who was entrenched in a battle with redshirt sophomore J.T. Barrett throughout the spring and summer, had mixed results in his first career regular-season start, completing nine of 18 passes for 186 yards. The Cleveland product threw for two touchdowns and an interception, as well.“I thought (Jones did) OK,” Meyer said. “I expect more. The turnover, you just don’t do that, throwing across, start scrambling around, but once again it’s a good team we played against, so we’ll take it and get better.”Eluding a nearly constant Virginia Tech pass rush on the opening drive, Jones led an eight-play, 64-yard march. Jones ducked around a tackler and flung it to sophomore H-back Curtis Samuel in one-on-one coverage, who pulled it in despite a defensive pass interference call to give the Buckeyes the early advantage.Virginia Tech received the ball first, but went three-and-out after an opening first-down pass along the sideline was confirmed after a replay review to be incomplete.OSU’s second drive did not require a repeat performance from Jones, as junior running back Ezekiel Elliott took his first carry 80 yards to put the Buckeyes up by two scores less than nine minutes into the game. The St. Louis native juked to his right through a hole up the middle and shook off a low tackle, and then it was off to the races.Elliott more than doubled his rushing total from last season’s 35-21 loss against the Hokies, as he only had 32 yards on eight carries in Columbus in 2014. After a missed field goal on each end — the latter being a missed 43-yarder by redshirt senior Duke transfer Jack Willoughby, who made his OSU debut — the first quarter came to a close with OSU leading 14-0 and 205-56 in yards from scrimmage. However, the second quarter took a much better turn for the home crowd of 65,632 at Lane Stadium, as the Hokies shook off a first-play holding penalty to accumulate consecutive gains of seven, 15 and then a 51-yard score.Virginia Tech redshirt senior quarterback Michael Brewer rolled out to his right and then threw the other way to junior fullback Sam Rogers, who caught the ball and eluded a pair of OSU tackles to find the endzone and cut the Buckeyes’ lead in half.Unable to answer the momentum shift, Jones threw his first interception on the next drive on a tipped third-down pass. Virginia Tech redshirt junior safety Desmond Frye dove forward to catch the pick, giving the Hokies a chance to tie the game starting at their own 44-yard line.Virginia Tech was not successful in knotting the game at 14, but it did move the ball forward 27 yards to enable sophomore Joey Slye to redeem his earlier miss with a 46-yard kick and narrow the deficit to 14-10.OSU seemed poised to go into the half maintaining the lead, but a muffed punt by Elliott — a surprise returner for the Buckeyes — allowed the Hokies to keep the ball at OSU’s 38-yard line. They did not waste the opportunity, as a play later Brewer found sophomore wide receiver Isaiah Ford for 36 yards down to the 2-yard line. After two unsuccessful runs, Brewer faked the handoff and rolled to his right, then threw to his left to redshirt senior tight end Ryan Malleck for the go-ahead score with 15 seconds left in the half. After piling up 144 yards and two scores in their two opening drives, the Buckeyes accumulated just 114 yards and no scores in its next four, as the Hokies put up 17 unanswered points. Jones did not complete a pass in the second quarter, finishing the half 6-of-13 for 95 yards.“I think the big thing is what was keeping them in the game. I don’t want to take anything away from them, but I felt like we were shooting ourselves in the foot,” senior offensive lineman Taylor Decker said. “A lot of their points came off turnovers, the muffed punt, we threw a pick here and there; it was just a matter of execution.”The redshirt junior did not waste any time picking up his first completion since the first quarter in the second half, finding Miller for a 54-yard touchdown pass on the third play of the half following a 20-yard run by Jones.“We went to the locker room, and we were down, but we pressed pause and we stepped up,” redshirt junior receiver Michael Thomas said.On the following drive, a hit on Brewer from OSU senior defensive lineman Adolphus Washington knocked the redshirt senior out of the game with a left shoulder injury. The Hokies replaced him with redshirt junior Branden Motley. The two offenses stalled after OSU’s half-opening score, as the next five drives ended without scores. However, Miller, on the play following a Virginia Tech fumble, single-handedly ended the scoring drought with his second score of the half. This time lined up at quarterback for the wildcat formation, Miller scrambled to his left and outran the rush to get into the open field. After being met by two Hokies players, Miller spun between the duo and carried it the rest of the way for a 53-yard run and an 11-point lead.“That was a blessing to see him be able to do that and come back,” Thomas said. “It was hard for him, sitting out a whole year … And then to switch positions, I just loved to see him happy, loved to see him smiling again.”After an interception by redshirt junior safety Tyvis Powell on the following drive, Jones put the game away with a 10-yard touchdown run, aided by a pair of pass interference penalties on the drive.OSU held the advantage in total yards over the Hokies 567 to 320, including a lopsided 360 to 128 margin in rushing yards. After trailing 17-14 at the half, the Buckeyes routed the Hokies 28-7 in the second half.Barrett did not see the field until OSU safely led by 18 midway through the final quarter. The Wichita Falls, Texas, product filled in for Jones on the final three drives, running for 40 yards before finding Thomas open in the end zone for a 26-yard score in his first series.“It’s great being on a team that’s good,” Elliott said. “Just all of these guys around you are great players … Just do your job, and you can trust that the people around you will make plays.”The Buckeyes are next set to make their home opener on Saturday against Hawaii. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. at Ohio Stadium. read more
