first_img Bizzy Was Sneaking Needles Into The Toilet For GSP Fight Having competed in mixed martial arts (MMA) for only six years, Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Light Heavyweight champion,  Daniel Cormier, has already accomplished more than many of his peers who have recorded significantly more cage time. Before claiming the vacant 205-pound UFC strap earlier this year, “DC” won the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix in 2012. And obtaining those titles didn’t come easy, as the former Olympic-level wrestling standout took out top competition such as Josh Barnett, Antonio Silva and Anthony Johnson, among others, to achieve his goal.Along the way, he also topped long time veterans such as Dan Henderson, Roy Nelson and Frank Mir. It’s a rather impressive resume for a man who had a late start in the sport. But, should Cormier now be considered an all-time great? According to the champ himself, he isn’t about to start labeling himself as such; however, he did declare on the Anik and Florian podcast that what he has accomplished to date shouldn’t be ignored, either. He explains:”After a fight like that (Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 192) you start looking at their overall accomplishments. When you look at what I’ve done, I think I got almost close to 10 Top 10 wins. I’ve had Barnett, Bigfoot, Johnson, Gustafsson — they were all ranked in the Top 5 at the time that I fought them. I’ve only been doing it for six years. That’s when you start thinking about it. But, I do think about legacy. As I get older, I talk to my managers and everybody else and we talk about new contracts and what we’re going to tell UFC when it’s time, I tell them, ‘I am going to fight.’ But, let’s say the wheels start to fall off and I lose or I lose twice. I’ll probably be done. My resume, my career and my legacy in this sport means more to me then just collecting some checks. I’m going to do it until I’m not competitive and when I’m not competitive and not winning at the level that I’m winning now, I’ll walk away. Because yes, legacy does matter to me and I want to leave a good one in MMA. It’s really hard to start looking at new people in terms of legends, though. Because when you think legends, you think of the guys like Fedor and Nogueira and Liddell. So it’s hard to start thinking of new guys as legends, though.” He may not be a legend, yet, but his bout against Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 192 a few weeks ago (see it) sure does help to establish Cormier’s resume even further.Cormier’s lone loss came to pound-for-pound great and former 205-pound champion Jon Jones earlier this year. It’s a fight “DC” desperately wants back, claiming he wants his next title defense to be against “Bones” to erase any and all doubts as to who the real king of the mountain is.But, will a win — maybe two — over Jones be enough to catapult Cormier into the same conversation as “The Last Emperor” and “The Iceman?” More From Greatest Highlights of Anderson Silva’s Career Gordon Ryan Competition Kit More: Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports Lights.
