That’s life in the SEC — seven of the top-10 recruiting classes came from that conference.NSD 2020: Signings trackerThe rankings changed a bit after the early signing period, but the heavy hitters remained the same. Here is a quick look at the top 10 classes and one big takeaway for each.National Signing Day 2020: Top 10 recruiting classes1. GeorgiaFive stars: CB Kelee Ringo, OT Broderick Jones, DT Jalen Carter, ATH Darnell WashingtonLowdown: The Bulldogs added more five-star talent on defense with cornerback Kelee Ringo and defensive tackle Jalen Carter and another offensive line anchor in tackle Broderick Jones. Darnell Washington is a 6-8, 260-pound tight end who might be the most exciting prospect of the bunch. That should help soften the blow of a massive NFL exodus. The Bulldogs also were active in the transfer market, and that landed Wake Forest quarterback Jamie Newman. Smart delivered another blue-chip class that should make another run at ending a national title drought that extends back to 1980.2. AlabamaFive stars: QB Bryce Young, DE Chris Braswell, DE Will Anderson, ATH Drew SandersLowdown: The Crimson Tide won’t have the top class for the second time in three years, but there’s no reason to panic under Nick Saban. Quarterback Bryce Young, defensive ends Chris Braswell and WIll Anderson and athlete Drew Sanders are all early enrollees. Young in particular will have a chance to compete for the starting quarterback job right away. He’s another exciting prospect who should work well with offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian. Braswell and Anderson will compete for time on the defensive line, and Sanders should also contribute early. Saban hasn’t lost his touch on the recruiting trail.3. ClemsonFive stars: QB DJ Uiagalelei, DT Bryan Bresee, DE Myles Murphy, RB Demarkcus Bowman, LB Trenton SimpsonLowdown: Dabo Swinney had the No. 1 class after the early signing period which, despite dropping two spots, shows the national reach of the program. Tajh Boyd had C.J. Spiller. Deshaun Watson had Wayne Gallman. Trevor Lawrence has Travis Etienne, and DJ Uiagalelei will settle in at the college level with running back Demarkcus Bowman. Uiagalelei will have a year to learn behind Lawrence, too. The Tigers reloaded at an elite level.NSD 2020: Updated class rankings, top unsigned players4. LSUFive stars: CB Elias Ricks, TE Arik GilbertLowdown: The Tigers lost passing game coordinator Joe Brady and defensive coordinator Dave Aranda after winning the national championship, but Ed Orgeron still put together an impressive top-five class. Tight end Arik Gilbert is a huge out-of-state get, and Elias Ricks will continue the trend of big-time cornerbacks landing in Baton Rouge. The Tigers added four-star tackle Marcus Dumervil and four-star linebacker Phillip Webb during the early signing period. There are a lot of holes to fill given how many LSU players left for the 2020 NFL Draft, so this class might have several players pressed into action early. The talent is there.5. Ohio StateFive stars: WR Julian Fleming, WR Jaxon Smith-Njigba, T Paris JohnsonLowdown: Ryan Day proved he can recruit a full cycle with the best class in the Big Ten, one that was able to bring in five-star receivers Julian Fleming and Jaxon Smith-Njigba. Given the work done by Heisman finalists Dwayne Haskins and Justin Fields the last two seasons — and the coming emergence of Garrett Wilson — it is becoming clear Ohio State will be a destination for elite quarterbacks and receivers under Day. On that note, Ohio State added to its quarterback depth with Jack Miller and CJ Stroud. Ohio State also is already off to a big start for 2021, too.6. Texas A&MFive stars: S Jaylon Jones, WR Demond DemasLowdown: Jimbo Fisher put together another top-10 recruiting class, and the talent at receiver improved with the addition of Demond Demas and Muhsin Muhammad III. On Wednesday, Fisher also got a commitment from four-star defensive tackle McKinnley Jackson, who chose the Aggies over Alabama. Safety Jaylon Jones also is on board. Fisher has proven he can recruit with the other powerhouses in the SEC, but the Aggies need to start beating those teams on the field to keep the momentum going into the next cycle. Texas A&M will also be in the mix for five-star running back Zachary Evans, who will likely make his decision in the spring.MORE: Ranking top 100 players of 2020 recruiting class7. AuburnFive stars: NoneLowdown: The Tigers built this class around running back Tank Bigsby, who was downgraded to a four star after the early signing period but still should help energize the running game around sophomore quarterback Bo Nix. Four-star tight end Jeremiah Pegues, four-star linebacker Desmond Tisdol and four-star safety Eric Reed were on board during the early signing period as well. Malzahn’s top four recruits in this cycle were from Georgia, where he has not lost his touch. It’s a solid class, even if it is missing that five-star centerpiece.8. FloridaFive stars: DT Gervon DexterLowdown: Dan Mullen loaded up with another class that features nine players from Florida with a recruiting ranking of four stars or better. Gervon Dexter is the biggest in-state recruit the Gators landed, and he signed along with four-star linebacker Derek Wingo and receiver Xzavier Henderson. Dual-threat quarterback Anthony Richardson is a hometown hero who will be in the mix down the line. Mullen did an excellent job on this cycle, and it didn’t hurt that Miami and Florida State had losing seasons. Florida is the place to be right now in the state.9. TexasFive stars: RB Bijan Robinson Lowdown: Bijan Robinson is the marquee player in another top-10 class for the Longhorns. Hudson Card (Lake Travis, Austin, Texas) is the next big quarterback from that quarterback pipeline, and he is already on campus. Unless, of course, dual-threat quarterback Ja’Quinden Jackson emerges into that player in the offense. Both will have a year to learn under Sam Ehlinger, and that’s a good thing. Tom Herman has elevated the program with the last three recruiting classes, and proven the Longhorns can at least compete in that area with Oklahoma.10. TennesseeFive stars: NoneLowdown: The Vols have a top-10 class for the first time since 2015, which shows the progress made under Jeremy Pruitt. This class revolves around four-star quarterback Harrison Bailey, who is already on campus and should have a year to develop as a backup. Pruitt swooped in to get four-star defensive tackle Dominic Bailey and upgraded the secondary with Keshawn Lawrence. The big get on National Signing Day was four-star receiver Malachi Wideman. There is momentum again on Rocky Top, but there is work to do in order to catch the other SEC powers. National Signing Day arrived Wednesday, and schools put the finishing touches on their recruiting classes for 2020.According to 247Sports’ Composite rankings, Georgia clinched the No. 1 class for the second time in three seasons under Kirby Smart. The Bulldogs edged out national championship contenders Alabama and Clemson for the top class, and Smart showed he has a knack for balancing the early signing period with National Signing Day.
