  • Congress Gandhis Come Out In Support Of P Chidambaram Hit Out At

first_imgNEW DELHI: The Congress today rallied behind its senior leader and former Union Minister P Chidambaram, who is wanted by two investigative agencies in a corruption case. A lookout notice was issued this morning against the former minister as CBI and the Enforcement Directorate failed to locate him since last evening. While Rahul Gandhi called it a “disgraceful misuse of power”, his sister Priyanka Gandhi said the former minister was being “shamefully hunted down”. Within hours, teams of the CBI and the ED made a beeline for his residence. Failing to find him there, some of them camped out there overnight. This morning, as the news came of the lookout notice, Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, her son Rahul Gandhi and daughter Priyanka Gandhi, protested vehemently against the move of the government. I strongly condemn this disgraceful misuse of power,” Rahul Gandhi tweeted. His sister Priyanka Gandhi tweeted: “An extremely qualified and respected member of the Rajya Sabha, @PChidambaram_IN ji has served our nation with loyalty for decades including as Finance Minister & Home Minister. He unhesitatingly speaks truth to power and exposes the failures of this government, but the truth is inconvenient to cowards so he is being shamefully hunted down,” Priyanka Gandhi tweeted. The BJP, though, has kept largely silent on the issue. This morning, party leader Amit Malviya took a dig at the Congress, saying, “Priyanka stood by Vadra, backing Chidambaram is natural”. Mr Chidambaram has been accused of facilitating a huge infusion of foreign funds into a television company, INX Media, in 2007 on the behest of his son Karti Chidambaram, who allegedly received kickbacks for this. At the time, he was the country’s finance minister in the UPA government. Mr Chidambaram has denied the allegations, saying it was politically motivated. (Inputs from NDTV.com)last_img read more

Derrick Kellier, has reiterated the Government’s stance on the issuing of work permits to foreigners to work in Jamaica.Addressing a ground breaking event for the launch of the Melia Braco Village in Trelawny on April 24, Minister Kellier said the Government will be unrelenting in its efforts to ensure that work permits are issued based on the guidelines governing the system. He said in issuing work permits, priority will be given to protecting the employment of Jamaican workers and will only be issued foreigners in cases where they are absolutely necessary.“The Ministry administers a rigorous work permit regime…(and)… when gaps arise in the availability of local skills for foreign investment initiatives, if we are not to frustrate the progress of these projects, then such skill gaps will have to be filled by workers from elsewhere,” Minister Kellier said.He noted further that the Government recognizes that the best way to ensure Jamaican workers are given priority treatment during the recruitment of workers is to create the necessary platforms for high level training for those persons. He added that his Ministry is in dialogue with a number of training agencies, with a view of ensuring that Jamaican workers receive the highest level training which will equip them for employment.“We are also working closely with HEART/NTA and Jamaica Promotions Corporation (JAMPRO) to identify the skills that are needed and to train our workforce… (and make them) ready for employment in investment projects,” Mr. Kellier said.Meanwhile, on the matter of the Ministry of Labour and Social Security’s Workers Passport initiative, Mr. Kellier is encouraging the management of the Melia Braco Village to work with the Ministry in using the construction site as a pilot for that project.Minister Kellier, in admitting that the legislation to implement the workers passport is yet to be passed in Parliament, said the Melia Braco Village site would be a good place to start.“These passports will be the first step in guaranteeing that workers are competent and equipped to operate safely on work sites in both international and local markets. And while I know that this initiative is still in the early stages of development and the legislation is pending….our team will be working assiduously with Melia to explore the possibility in incorporating the workers passport as a pilot on this Braco site by the contractors,” he stated.Under a 15 year lease management agreement with the Government through the National Insurance Fund (NIF),Melia Resorts, a Spanish-based company, will be operating the former Braco Village Resort in Trelawny. The resort will become known as the Melia Braco Village, with 250 new rooms being added to the existing 225. • BAHAMAS Ministry of Social Services Announces Plans for Rehabilitation Week

first_imgFacebook Twitter Google+LinkedInPinterestWhatsApp#Bahamas, November 3, 2017 – Nassau – The week of November 6th – 13th, 2017 is Rehabilitation Week.   The Hon. Lanisha Rolle, Minister of Social Services and Urban Development made the declaration at a press conference to officially announce activities planned by the Department of Rehabilitative and Welfare Services to observe the week. The activities include the following: a Juvenile Forum for high school students to address Bullying, Gang Violence and Sexual Health; a Parenting Workshop organized by the National Parenting Programme in conjunction with the Northeastern Pastors Alliance; and a Staff Motivational Seminar.   The theme for the week is, “Redefining Life through Rehabilitation.”Minister Rolle, at the department’s University Drive offices, said: the activities aim to inform the public about the role the Department plays in providing services to the community as well as in the development of youth, particularly those who encounter problems with the law, who are in Correctional Institutions, and who seek professional help.“Juveniles in Correctional Institutions share the same interests with all youths, and because they are separated from family, friends and neighborhood groupings, they have an increased need for informal relationships with others.   The Department of Rehabilitative and Welfare Services recognizes this need and is taking every corrective measure to ensure that proper interventions and programmes are in place to treat and rehabilitate, as we move towards empowering them for a better tomorrow.“The rehabilitation process is considered to be complex, with a number of variables which are all directed towards behavior modification, behavior management and lifestyle changes of the ex-offender.   However, the most promising rehabilitation takes place in the home and community.  The home is where the child first receives from their parents the kind of love and nurturing that shape their lives forever.   I venture to say that the occurrence of violence in our school system is a direct result of a lack of or insufficient parenting in the home,” said Minister Rolle. She opined that incarceration does little to break the cycle of crime or rehabilitate the offender, and once an offender is sentenced to incarceration for any offence, it is likely that he will return should he not receive the necessary intervention. The role of the Department of Rehabilitative and Welfare Services in the Ministry of Social Services and Urban Development is not only to develop programs based on the ex-offender’s rehabilitative needs, but to also provide training and technical assistance that build community capacity, so they can develop and implement projects that make a difference in the lives of children, youths and community. She pledged the Ministry’s commitment to transforming communities through the delivery of “effective” and “efficient” services to and on behalf of the Bahamian people.By: Kathryn Campbell (BIS) Facebook Twitter Google+LinkedInPinterestWhatsApp BIS Photos/Derek SmithPhoto captions:Header photo:Representatives of the Department of Rehabilitative and Welfare Services who are responsible for Rehabilitation Week are pictured.Insert #1: The Hon.
