  • LA Lakers downplay young core hitting ‘rookie wall’

first_imgThe two words sounded blasphemous as the Lakers heard the phrase uttered around their practice facility on Wednesday.Apparently the “rookie wall” does not explain why the Lakers (14-54) enter Friday’s game against the Phoenix Suns (18-49) at Staples Center with a patch of sub-par performances against sub-par teams (New York, Sacramento). “I don’t use those type of excuses,” Lakers coach Byron Scott said. “They come in every day and are willing to work.”The Lakers did not work much in losses to the Knicks and Kings. They opened both first quarters scoring a combined 26 points on an 8-of-49 clip from the field. They looked lethargic only a week after pulling a shocking upset against the NBA defending champion (Golden State). Early in the Lakers’ loss to Sacramento on Tuesday, Clarkson committed a turnover and then attempted a 26-foot 3-pointer that he called a “crazy shot” at the top of the key. Clarkson then crashed the glass, a tactic that left the Lakers exposed on transition defense. “It was out of character,” Clarkson said. “It’s those kind of shots I got to take out and get back to what I’m doing.”That has contributed toward Clarkson shooting below 50 percent for three consecutive games. That contrasted to Clarkson’s usual consistency that has entailed scoring in double figures in 27 games and leading the Lakers in scoring in 14.“I don’t put a whole lot of stock into it,” Scott said. “You’re going to have stretches in this season where you’ll have bad games.”Hence, Clarkson sounded confident on how to fix his recent issues. “A lot of it is on shot choices,” Clarkson said. “It’s something I have to look at and find some easy ones.”Words of praiseRandle’s eyes lit up when informed Kings center DeMarcus Cousins raved about his potential. Cousins had mentored Randle beginning his freshman year at the University of Kentucky. “It means something because it’s from your peers,” Randle said. “Boogie is a guy that’s going to challenge you.”Injury updateLakers forward Brandon Bass completed non-contact drills in Wednesday’s practice after missing Tuesday’s game because of a corneal abrasion in his right knee. As usual, Kobe Bryant did not practice amid soreness in his right shoulder.“It’s the same,” Scott said of Bryant’s shoulder. “When he says the same, I don’t know if that’s good or bad.” “We looked at Golden State and knew we had to come out ready,” Lakers forward Julius Randle said. “Teams with less talent that we think we should beat, we may come out with a lackadaisical attitude.”Randle then admitted, “The challenge is more mental.”“They could be tired. But everybody is tired at this point,” Scott said. “One thing you can do better is take care of yourself, eat right, get proper rest and come ready to play.”Sudden hiccupsIt took nearly all season for Jordan Clarkson to solidify a reputation as a steady, hard-working guard who allows his play to speak louder than his words. It took less than 30 seconds for Clarkson to offer none of that in a series of head-scratching sequences that prompted Scott to yank him off the floor.center_img Newsroom GuidelinesNews TipsContact UsReport an Errorlast_img read more

  • “Rewriting the Rural Narrative” is subject of presentation to North-Central Iowa economic development officials

first_imgMASON CITY — A senior research fellow for the University of Minnesota Extension Center for Community Vitality is telling north-central Iowa economic development officials today about development in rural communities.Benjamin Winchester says in many ways rural areas get a bad rap when it comes to economic development, as detailed in his report entitled “Rewriting the Rural Narrative”.  “The key message is here is that, kind of the narrative we used to describe our small towns, ultimately they shoot ourselves in the foot. We talk about what we used to have, or what we should have had, or what we could have had, and yes things have changed, but that does not mean in our small towns took a right turn into the ditch. In many ways, our small towns are still here, they’re surviving, and in many ways thriving. We’ve got a diverse economy, we’ve got really a thriving nonprofit sector, so we’ve got the number of groups almost astound you, the number groups of in these small counties we’ve got go up by 10 to 15%.”Winchester says more people are moving into and not away from rural areas. “We call that the ‘Brain Gain’. There are people in their thirties, forties, and fifties, moving into just about every rural county, not just in Iowa but across the United States. These folks are bringing with them their education, their skills, their kids and helping in many ways to reinvigorate our rural communities.”Winchester says many Midwesterners use a population number incorrectly as a barometer for a community’s success. “What I have found out really is that we cannot be infatuated with total population. Ultimately some of the trends point away from even growing our population for a number of years, especially as our seniors age, and we had no longer have kids in her household. I call this the ‘Demographic Destiny’, there are some things we cannot control.”Winchester is the guest speaker at the annual meeting of the North Iowa Corridor Economic Development Corporation today in Mason City.
